Masako is a woman of about 30 years and some, difficult in temperament and reserved. She lives with her family and has spent a great deal of her life working in her mother?s laundry. She also shares the house with her sister, cruel Yukari. When the mother unexpectedly dies, the relationship between the sisters deteriorates even further. One night, they have a fearful quarrel. Next day, Yukari is dead. Masako grabs some clothes from the laundry, steals the money given in collaboration for her mother?s funeral, and flees to Osaka. The city is full of refugees from a recent earthquake, and she will have to reconstruct her life. The ghost of her sister torments her. In addition to escaping from the police, she must also rid herself of a feeling of guilt that so besets her; however, she is not at all repentant over what she has done. To her, her acts are a chance to start anew, living her life in full, as though life were a vast ocean to swim in.
