Sam Wood?s film was missing for 75 years. All that was left was a one-minute long fragment. In 2004, however, a copy, virtually intact of this unique partnership between silent film stars Rodolfo Valentino and Gloria Swanson, was found as part of the estate of an Amsterdam private collector. The film is now once more in circulation, having undergone a delicate process of restoration by the Amsterdam Film Museum. Based on a novel by Elinor Glyn, the plot tells the drama of a woman, Theodora Fitzgerald (Swanson), the daughter of aristocrats who have lost all of their wealth, and who is all but forced into marriage for the sake of convenience, to a rich businessman who is much older - all under pressure from her family. On her honeymoon, she meets fascinating Lord Bracondale (Valentino), and her firm resolution to remain true to her husband is shaken.

SAM WOOD

U.S. director, born in Philadelphia, in 1883. He began his career in 1915, as assistant to Cecil B. de Mille. As from 1919, he started out on his own, as one of the most highly-successful film makers in Paramount. He moved to the MGM studios in 1927. He directed two of the greatest successes with the Marx brothers, Uma Noite na Ópera (1935) and Um Dia nas Corridas (1937. His most celebrated films are Adeus Mr Chips, Kitty Foyle, Em Cada Coração Um Pecado, Por Quem os Sinos Dobram, with three nominations for an Oscar as director.
