Langston Whitfield is a journalist for the Washington Post who has been sent to South Africa to cover the sessions for the Commission of Truth and Reconciliation. He is somewhat apprehensive in respect to the journey, for he does not believe in a process of reconciliation, and thinks this is just one more gimmick so those responsible for apartheid will escape punishment. Anna Malan is an African poetess covering sessions for the South-African state radio. She is an enthusiast of the process, with an enormous respect for native African tradition, with great hopes for her country. As members of the press, Anna and Langston meet and are soon in disagreement. In time, a shared experience listening to moving, painful witnesses, brings them closer.
