Elvis That`s the Way It Is - 2000 Edition

A new version of the celebrated documentary directed, in 1970, by Denis Sanders (1929-1987) on Elvis Presley (1953-1977) and the so-called “Las Vegas phase” of the pop idol. This Elvis That’s The Way It Is – Special Edition shows new aspects of the career and the personality of the controversial singer and is now augmented by 30 minutes of scenes that have never before been shown. There are rehearsals, shows, and backstage scenes of the life of the musician. “Rick Schmindlin has captured the soul of Elvis, man and pop star”, wrote critic Pete Smith. Among other classics, we see and listen to Elvis singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “Love Me Tender”, “Don’t Be Cruel”, “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Can?t Stop Loving You”, “I Got a Woman”, and “That’s All Right”.

American director born in New York in 1929, that first became known in the fifties working together with his brother Terry Sanders. He began his career with a short film Subject: Narcotics (1951), followed by A Time Out of War (1954), that won an Oscar for best short film. The next year, he was assistant to actor and director Charles Laughton in The Night of the Hunter (1955). In 1958, he wrote the script for The Naked and the Dead, directed by Raoul Walsh. In 1959, he directed Crime and Punishment, his first feature for cinema, based on the Dostoievski’s novel. Sanders also made some of the episodes for very popular television series such as Naked City (1958) and Route 66 (1960). His musical and documentary That’s The Way It Is, of 1970, became a classic of its kind. The last film in his career was a science-fiction comedy Invasion of the Bee Girls, in 1973. He died in San Diego, California, in 1987.
