Born in Calanda, Spain, in 1900, his first films were French collaborations with Salvador Dalí: the short film Un Chien Andalou (1928) and the feature The Golden Age (1930). After living in New York, he moved to Mexico in 1946 e directed many of his works there, including Los Olvidados (1950), Él (1953), The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz (1955) and Nazarin (1959). After a brief return to Franco’s Spain in order to make Viridiana (1961), winner of the Golden Palm in Cannes, he returned to Mexico and filmed The Exterminating Angel (1962). Starting with The Diary of a Chambermaid (1964), he began the French period of his filmography, when he filmed, among others, Simon of the Desert (1965), Belle du Jour (1967), The Milky Way (1969), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). He died in Mexico in 1983. In 2000, the 24th Mostra presented a retrospective of his body of work.
