“My return to Bosie was psychologically inevitable. How could I not love him? He had ruined my life.” These words are from English writer Oscar Wilde, in 1897, referring to Lord Alfred Douglas, also known as Bosie. They were lovers, but love ended in tragedy. In Victorian England, homosexuality was a crime and the romance eventually led Oscar Wilde to court on accusations from Bosie’s father. Wilde died in 1900. Alfred Douglas lived until 1945, but solitary and disillusioned. Soon after the romance, he lost his entire fortune on horses, was converted to Catholicism and became militant against homosexualism. “Probably, the three of us, Wilde, my father and myself were successful at doing exactly what Wilde said, killing the thing we love”, wrote poet Alfred Douglas, main character in Two Loves.
