This film’s origins lie in another, the one that the director René Allio shot in Normandy in 1975 based on a local crime: I, Pierre Rivière, Having Slaughtered My Mother, My Sister and My Brother… Nicolas Philibert was 24 at the time. René Allio offered him a position as first assistant director. Shot a few miles from the scene of the triple murder 140 years earlier, this film owed most of its uniqueness to the fact that nearly every part was given to local country people. Director Philibert decided to return to Normandy to seek out the transient actors of the film. Thirty years have passed and he met, for instance, Claude Hébert, leading role of the assassin when he was 16 years old.

NICOLAS PHILIBERT

Born in 1951. After studying philosophy, he participated in many films as assistant director. His first film is from 1978 together with Gérard Mordillat, with the documentary La Voix de son Maître. In this same year, he made a documentary three hours long, based on interviews with some of the presidents of the largest industrial concerns in France, censored at the time, and only shown years later by the Sept Channel under the title Patrons 78/91. He directed his first feature in 1990 - Louvre City followed by In the Land of the Deaf (1992) and Un Animal, Des Animaux (1994).
