When two young Americans find out their Mexican pal has been deported, they decide to smuggle him back across the border. Surprised at how easy it was, the friends become professional human smugglers, or “Coyotes.” As the business consumes more of their time, they find this “quick scheme” is affecting them in personal ways. The obsessive Steve is driven further away from his loving fiancée, while Mexican-American J. is brought close to a young Mexican woman. Soon, bringing immigrants across one at a time isn’t enough. They maximize their income by leading whole groups across the desert on foot and bringing on additional staff. But successful expansion also means increased attention from both Border Patrol and rival coyote gangs that wish to violently defend their turf.
