The animation centers around Ged, once the greatest warlock in Earthsea. When he was as yet young, with a thirst for power and for knowledge, he meddled in centuries-old secrets and released a terrible shadow over the entire world. Now strange events are occurring in Earthsea. People behave differently. They see beings that, as humans, they should not see as, for instance, dragons. Ged decides to investigate and meets a somewhat imprudent young prince, Arren. In spite of his shy appearance, Arren has a dark and powerful side that surfaces to protect those he is fond of. This situation is ideal for witch Kumo who uses the boy’s insecurity to get to Ged. The story of Ged and how he matured shows how he mastered his magic, tamed a dragon, and traversed the gates of death to re-establish balance in Earthsea.

GORO MIYAZAKI

He was born in 1967, in Tokyo, Japan. His father is Hayao Miyazaki, master of Japanese anime and director of the well-known features Miyazaki’s Spirited Away (27th and 28th Mostra) and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004). He graduated from Shinshu University, Faculty of Agriculture, and started his career as a construction consultant, he designed parks or public institutions. In the 1990s, he was responsible for the construction of the Studio Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo, where he became the first Managing Director. Toshio Suzuki, the producer, decided to let Goro direct the next Ghibli movie since he was impressed by Goro’s talent of making decisions quickly and properly and by his ability to draw pictures. In 2005, he participated in the documentary short Le Voyage de Chihiro – Le Musée Ghibli. Tales from Earthsea is his first animated feature.
