In the small town of Skillet, west of Ireland, Harry Maloney is plagued by a recurrent dream where he sees himself transformed into the shape of a tree, then cut down to make coffins. He lives with his son Gus in a house falling to pieces on the outskirts of town, the scene of accelerated decadence for Harry. Believing that the measure of grandeur for a man is in the importance of his enemies, Harry chooses as his personal adversary an entrepreneur, George, the owner of a pub, and the most powerful man in the region. To make matters worse, Gus embarks on a relationship with Eileen, George’ mistress, a newcomer to the town. When Harry discovers that his greatest enemy is on intimate terms with his son?s girlfriend, he decides it is to be all or nothing.

GORAN PASKALIEVIC

Born in Belgrade in 1947, he graduated from the National School of Cinema in Prague. He has made 30 documentaries and 12 features. The ascent of nationalism in Yugoslavia led him to leave the country in 1992 to live in Paris. In 1998, he returned to Belgrade to make The Powder Keg, on the circuit in Brazil the following year. His frequent outbursts against the regime and dictator Milosevic brought him more trouble. He went into voluntary exile once again, this time to Ireland to film How Harry Became a Tree. He returned to Belgrade after Milosevic’s fall. He also directed And the Days Are Passing (1980; 4th Mostra) and Someone Else’s America (1995; 19th Mostra).
