It is night somewhere in the northern hemisphere. A series of strange incidents are occurring in town. They are apparently not related to one another. In fact, the level of surreal situations in evidence is so great that, at times, they do not seem to bear any relation to one another: an immigrant lost in the city is badly beaten up in the middle of the street; a magician makes a terrible mistake during one of his numbers. In the midst of this confusion, one person is outstanding - Karl, who has just set fire to his furniture shop to collect the insurance. To sleep the night through is going to be no easy task for any of the residents in town. The following day, signs of chaos are spread about everywhere. Karl is one of the few who can see beyond appearances. He gradually becomes aware of how absurd the world has become, and how difficult it is to behave like a human being.
