Marina is a beautiful, healthy girl, living in an asylum, the daughter of parents with leprosy. She finds an opportunity to leave the asylum when she is asked in marriage by Zé Amaro, a widower and boat-maker on the coast of São Paulo. Once she is married, Marina is prey to deception on every side: her husband is forever drunk, and she proves extremely desirable to the local males. A boy, Chico, is a comfort to her and his grandmother, Sinhá Felicidade, involved in witchcraft, becomes her advisor. Former mother-in-law to Zé Amaro, Sinhá Felicidade hates him and attributes her daughter?s death to him. The situation grows worse when Marina is pursued by Manoel, her husband?s partner, who tries to win her by force. Alberto, an adventurous seaman arrives on the scene and falls in love with Marina who loves him too and everything changes. Caiçara, the first feature produced at the Vera Cruz Studios was awarded prizes: Best South-American Film in the Punta del Este Film Festival, in 1951; Best Producer to Alberto Cavalcanti for the Governor of the State of São Paulo Prize, in 1952; Best Actress to Eliane Lage and Best Supporting Actress to Maria Joaquina da Rocha, for the Brazilian Association of Cinematographic Chroniclers Prize in Rio de Janeiro, in 1950.
