Patrick "Kitten" Braden is born in a small town in Ireland, son of a forbidden affair between the local priest and a housemaid. He is abandoned at birth by his mother and is adopted by an alcoholic named Whiskers who throws him out of the house when she realizes he is a homosexual. He has nowhere to go, and moves to London, where he becomes a cabaret singer and falls for a politician. His happiness, however, is short-lived. The politician is killed in an attack by the IRA. Alone, once more, Patrick goes in search of his mother who disappeared. But he is unfairly accused of killing a soldier in a nightclub.
