In the eighteenth century, to Portugal, Brazil is still a territory uncharted, full of mystery, with inhabitants unknown. The King has, at this time, some notion of Brazil?s continental dimensions, but would have to map out the country. In 1778, an expedition is sent to the Pantanal to draw up a topographical survey of the region, under astronomer, naturalist and cartographer Diogo. The expedition is to set out for Forte Coimbra, but is constantly besieged by Indians on horseback with whom Portugal attempts a peace agreement. The group is led by Pedro and includes Antônio, who has with him a map showing prospective silver mines. The trajectory of the group is marked by every type of violence and barbarity, mainly against the beautiful Indian women met along the way. Now five hundred years after the discovery of Brazil, the film provides a crude portrayal of how relations developed between the Portuguese invaders and the natives.
