Shunpei Kim is a poor Korean who has immigrated to Osaka, Japan. He faces the greatest difficulties in a struggle to survive, but finally manages to earn a living selling fish cakes. The years go by, and he becomes a rich and powerful businessman and a money-lender. He marries a widow, Harumi, mother of one daughter and has other children by her. Financial success, however, seems to make Shunpei take a turn for the worse. He drinks and beats his wife and children, and destroys the objects inside the house. His violent character knows no limits, nor does he fear any opposition. Until the day a son, his offspring from an extra-marital affair, suddenly appears on the scene and demands compensation for the years of abandonment.
