The film takes place in the course of one night. The Anniversary Party casts its gaze that is true and at the same time comical, although at times sarcastic, on a group of friends. The couple consisting of author Joe (Alan Cumming) and actress Sally Therrian (Jennifer Jason Leigh) decide to throw a party to commemorate a series of happy events in their marriage: the six-year anniversary, the decision to start a family, and reconciliation after a year apart. They invite their closest friends and, to avoid being sued for disturbing the peace, they invite their awkward fault-finding neighbors. An unexpected present, however, involves the party in an uncontrolled spiral and unleashes an outburst of painful confessions. What was originally planned to be a celebration, becomes a biting analysis of a marriage bordering on an abyss.
