Hong Kong, 1962. Journalist Chow, editor of the local newspaper has just moved with his wife to a building occupied mainly by members of the Shanghai community. In his new abode, Chow meets Li-Chun, a most beautiful girl who has also lived in the building for only a short while. Like the journalist, she is married and lives with her companion. Li-zhen is a secretary in a company, and is often deprived of the company of her husband, in fact somewhat regularly. He is a representative of a Japanese firm and, thus, travels a great deal. Chow spends more and more of his time in Li-Chun?s company: they play mahjong with their landlords, and discuss the latest bits of gossip. A great friendship is the result of this intense conviviality up to the time when Chow and Li-Chun are obliged to face up to the same situation: their respective companions are having an affair.
