The lights are against for Penny and Phil where love is concerned. Life has not been generous to them. Penny spends her days as a cashier in a supermarket. Phil is a taxi driver and makes do as he can behind the wheel. They live on the outskirts of London and are part of the ever more opressed working class in the country. The prospects for their children are also not the best possible. Rachel is a cleaning woman in an old peoples`s home; Rory is unemployed and more aggressive by the day. Love for Penny and Phil appears to be in its final stages, but may recover at any moment, in response to a good or a bad piece of news.

MIKE LEIGH

Nasceu em 1943, em Salford. Estudou em Londres na Academia Real de Arte Dramática, na Escola de Artes de Camberwell e na Central Art School. Dirigiu e encenou sua primeira peça de teatro em 1965 ("The Box Play"). Depois escreveu mais de vinte peças, incluindo "Babies Grow Old"(74), "Abigail`s Party"(77), "Ecstasy"(79), "Goose-Pimples"(81), "Smelling a Rat"(88) e "A Greek Tragedy", que ele mesmo encenou na Austrália em 1989. Realizou seu primeiro longa-metragem em 1971, "Bleak Moments". Dirigiu depois "Hard Labour"(72), "Nuts in May"(75), "Who`s Who"(78), "Grow Ups"(80), "Home Sweet Home"(82), "Meantime"(83), "Four Days in July"(84), "High Hopes"(88) e "Life is Sweet"(90).
