To provide a better life for his family in the country, 18-year-old Mateus accepts a job in a junkyard in São Paulo for his new boss, Luca. But when he and a few other boys become trapped in the dangerous world of human trafficking, Mateus will be forced to decide between working for the very man who imprisoned him or risk his and his family’s future.


Winner of the Sorriso Diverso Venezia prize and special mention by the Fai Persona Lavoro Ambiente Foundation for a foreign film at the section Horizons Extra at Venice International Film Festival. It was also presented at Toronto Film Festival.

Alexandre Moratto
Alexandre Moratto

Born in 1988, he is the son of a Brazilian mother and an American father. He graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) and worked as the assistant to filmmaker Ramin Bahrani. He directed some short movies, such as The Other Side (2010), Signal (2011), The Parting (2012) and The Person You Love (2015). Socrates (2018), his first feature film, received a Special Mention of the Jury at the 42nd Mostra and was awarded at Independent Spirit Award. 7 Prisoners is his second feature film.
